Dormitory shelters and similar facilities where people are in close proximity to each other make them a high-risk environment for transmission. Portland area shelters with dormitories require a TB card for admission. Testing is a simple, outpatient procedure that involves getting a needle prick with a reactive agent on it. The skin is then observed two days later to determine if a person is infected with TB, or has the disease.
